This latest attempt at telling the epic Midway battle is rife with inaccuracies. A couple of them are inexcusable. On the lesser side of the errors, the early raids on the Marshalls and Gilberts shows aircraft flying over mountainous terrain. These islands have no high terrain. And the TBD’s that are depicted in these raids are shown carrying bombs and torpedoes, all the while in incorrect insignia. Never in the service life of the Devastator did it ever carry both types of ordnance at the same time. Separately yes, but never together. But the real travesty in this film comes in the form of three glaring inaccuracies. The first deals with the deaths of O’Flaherty and Guido. The film has both men dying on the day of the battle. In truth, they were captured and brutally tortured by the Japanese for two weeks before being weighted down and thrown into the ocean. Why hide the truth? Was the movies’s director and producers playing to the sensitivities of their Japanese cohorts during the making of the film? The second embellishment comes in the portrayal of Dick Best. He was never the hot dog and combative pilot as Ed Skrein portrays him to be. This isn’t Skrein’s fault, but with the poor writing of Wes Tooke. The third inaccuracy, and the one that really upset me was there is no mention of Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher during the battle. He was the tactical commander of the U. S. fleet during this engagement. The movie erroneously depicts Admiral Spruance as the tactical lead in the battle. He only assumed this role as Fletcher was abandoning the sinking Yorktown, some hours after three of the four Japanese aircraft carriers were destroyed. This is an ugly disservice to Fletcher’s contribution to the ultimate victory. Really, really bad form. I read a lot about it too, in books like John Toland’s THE RISING SUN. I remember the 1976 Movie MIDWAY with the stellar cast of Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn Hal Holbrook, Robert Mitchum, Pat Morita, and Glenn Ford. I expect many will measure this 2019 movie by the 1976 classic. I think the 1976 movie tells the “big picture” a little better and is more packed with personal drama due to the stellar acting qualities of the cast. The flamboyant personalities of the U. and Japanese commanders were vividly dramatized by the best actors of the day. That’s fine, because those people were flamboyant, so that movie was true-to-life. However, the producers of this 2019 movie wisely decided not to duplicate the personality profile acting of the 1976 version. This movie is weighted more to the reality stories of the Navy men and pilots who fought the battles, with the “big picture” layered on top of that. The scenes of battle, preparation of battle, and the counting of costs of dead and wounded after the battles are shown magnificently from the perspectives of the servicemen and their families. Perhaps about half the film is combat scenes, filmed spectacularly with aircraft and ships from the 1940’s. So, you feel as if you were a participant in going to war with the equipment of that era. The most powerful emotionally-charged dramatic scenes are nicely tied together at the end. It’s realistic in showing the heroism of both sides without white washing the barbarity of the Japanese on some occasions, such as dealing with two shotdown American pilots the Japanese captured during the battle. I did not see anything that would be objectionable for children to see --- no gratuitous sex or offensive language. It’s an excellent movie to understand what happened at Midway, what the stakes were for the United States, and what they meant to the men who fought and died there. Allerdings war es damals noch leichter, spannende bzw. überzeugende Filme zu drehen. Überdies haben Schauspieler wie Henry Fonda, Charlton Heston, James Coburn, Robert Mitchum, etc. meine Generation wohl zu sehr geprägt, um objektive Vergleiche mit den gegenwärtigen Darstellern zuzulassen. Zu „MIDWAY – FÜR DIE FREIHEIT“ ist zu bemerken, dass mich der Film vom Anfang bis zum Ende gefesselt hat, obgleich die einzelnen Filmabschnitte relativ rasch wechseln (es wurde ja auch die Vorgeschichte eingearbeitet) und die Phasen der Schlacht nahezu krampfhaft knapp durchgezogen werden. Die militärischen Fakten kamen in der Fassung von 1976 etwas besser zur Geltung. Die Bild- und Tonqualität sind absolut zufriedenstellend. Die Leistungen der Darsteller überzeugen, obwohl die Eigenheiten des Filmes nur wenig Spielraum für die Charaktere der Protagonisten lassen. Dazu läuft die Handlung wohl auch zu rasch ab. Was dargestellt wird, kommt gut rüber und was nicht dargestellt werden soll, ist vom Darsteller nicht zu verantworten. Nur wenige Personen dürfte es stören, dass bei Angriffen oftmals mehrere Flugzeuge gleichzeitig mit völlig identen Effekten zerstört werden. Das ist eben moderne Computertechnik. So etwas wirkt echt komisch, denn wenn sich bereits beim Anflug in relativ großer Höhe binnen Sekunden die Hälfte des angreifenden Verbandes in seine Einzelteile zerlegt, wird üblicherweise der Angriff abgebrochen oder zumindest die Taktik geändert. Die gute alte Pyrotechnik ermöglichte vielfältigere und realistischer wirkende Darstellungen. Was den Film aus meiner Sicht wirklich auszeichnet, ist der klare Verzicht auf die heutzutage üblichen Vorgaben der so genannten „Political Correctness“. So beschränkt sich der Film auf die Darstellung besorgter weiblicher Angehöriger von im Einsatz befindlichen Soldaten. Es wird nicht – wie beispielsweise in PEARL HARBOUR (2001) – krampfhaft eine Liebesgeschichte eingebaut, nur um Platz für „Heldinnen“ zu schaffen. Es wird auch keine einzige Rolle für einen Renommier-Neger geschaffen, der sämtliche Tugenden verkörpert (in informierten Kreisen ist hinreichend bekannt, dass Schwarze in den US-Streitkräften lediglich in Hilfsfunktionen verwendet wurden). Und ganz besonders wird in diesem Film keine Propaganda für Schwule und Lesben gemacht, was sonst nahezu überall zum kulturellen „Service“ gehört. Dafür – besonders wegen der Inkaufnahme des damit verbundenen Risikos – ein großes BRAVO! Die Gesellschaft braucht nämlich keine Gehirnwäsche. Was mich persönlich stört, ist das heutzutage übliche Gequatsche in verschiedenen Sprachen. Einem Durchschnittsmenschen dürfte bewusst sein, dass Japaner zumeist japanisch gesprochen haben. Das ständige Lesen von Untertiteln beeinträchtigt nämlich die Aufnahme des Bildgeschehens. Vollsynchronisation wäre wirklich sinnvoller! Ein sachlicher und informativer Film, irgendwo zwischen lebendiger Dokumentation und Kriegsfilm. Wer sich billige Extrem-Action erwartet, der wird enttäuscht sein (getroffene Flugzeuge und Schiffe zeigen meist Wirkung, auch wenn diese von Protagonisten gesteuert werden). Reviewed in France on March 13, 2020 Verified Purchase Avant de visionner ce film je ne savais pas si je devais m'attendre à un excellent spectacle comme Pearl Harbor ou un film de guerre moyen (pour moi en tout cas) comme Dunkerque. Et au final, on ne peut pas dire que j'ai été déçu car c'est comme Pearl Harbor mais en encore mieux. Une des raisons étant sans doute que le réalisateur a eu la bonne idée de ne pas rajouter une histoire d'amour tirant en longeur comme dans le film de Michael Bay. Au niveau de l'histoire, ce film est bien sûr centré sur la bataille de Midway mais ce qui est bien ce que d'autres batailles (comme Pearl Harbor ou le raid du colonel Doolittle entre autres) sont également présentées. Ce qui apporte une compréhension générale du conflit dans le Pacifique et montre à quel point la bataille de Midway était importante pour les 2 camps. Un autre point positif est la présentation des différents protagonistes qui ont permis de déchiffrer le code japonais et de préparer le piège pour détruire la flotte japonaise. Ce film ne montre pas que la bataille en elle-même mais tout ce qui a amené les forces américaines et japonaises à s'affronter à cet endroit-là et à ce moment-là. La minutie et la pertinence des faits présentés dans ce film sont vraiment remarquables selon moi. Mais au-delà d'une histoire solide et prenante ce que j'ai particulièrement apprécié dans ce film ce sont les combats aériens (les bombardements en piqué notamment) qui sont d'un réalisme à couper le souffle. C'est bien simple, dans certaines séquences vous avez vraiment l'impression d'être dans le cockpit à la place du pilote en train de plonger sur un porte-avions japonais. Question spectacle c'est du très très haut niveau! Bien sûr, certains reprocheront encore au réalisateur d'avoir trop montré le côté héroïque des soldats américains mais moi ça ne m'a pas vraiment gêné. C'est comme dans Pearl Harbor ou Il faut sauver le soldat Ryan donc pas exagéré selon moi. Au niveau des acteurs, ils sont tous vraiment très bons et crédibles dans leurs différents rôles. Certains comme Ed Skrein ou Patrick Wilson sont peut-être au-dessus des autres mais dans l'ensemble c'est vraiment homogène et les acteurs servent bien l'histoire. Der Film war sehr unterhaltsam, allerdings gibt es doch einige Punkte, die mich gestört haben. Ed Skrein: Ist m. E. eine Fehlbesetzung. So ein Overacting mitr seinem permanenten Grinsen und dem Kaugummigekaue hab ich noch nicht erlebt. CGI: Da ist man doch von Roland Emmerich besseres gewohnt, schaut man sich z. B. 2012, Independence Day 2 oder The Day after tomorrow an. Hier haben teilweise die Szenen nicht harmonisch zusammengepasst. Bspl. als die zwei Matrosen zwischen den beiden Schiffen am Seil hingen und unter ihnen das Feuer auf dem Wasser tanzte, oder als im Hintergrund die ARIZONA mit schwarzen Rauchschwaden am Abbrennen und Kentern ist und in der Bildmitte der Pilot mit seinem Flugzeug agiert. Der Sound hingegen ist bombastisch, da kommt richtig freude auf. Ich habe ein 9. 3 System am Laufen und wurde von allen Seiten voll bedient. Die Bässe haben bei den Schlachten, und da gibt es einige von, so richtig Druck aufgebaut und eine super dynamische Akustik aufgebaut. Langweilig ist der Film nun wirklich nicht aber es fehlt ihm einfach etwas (mehr) Tiefe bzw. Story-Inhalt und -Aufbau. JA, es ist ein Emmerich, was soll man erwarten, aber es wurden viele Charaktere nur angespielt, ohne wirklich für den Film bedeutsam zu sein. Alles in Allem kann man sich den Film aber ruhig anschauen und m. gehört er auch in eine gut sortierte Sammlung, weil eben Emmerich drauf steht, aber da wäre mehr drin gewesen. An diese Streifen kommt auch diese Midway-Verfilmung nicht ganz heran. Aber es handelt sich um einen spannenden, guten Kriegsfilm nach historischen Tatsachen, der mich bis zum Filmschluss gefesselt hat. Der Film schlägt einen weiten Bogen - von dem Vorkriegstreffen des späteren amerikanischen Nachrichtenoffiziers Edwin Thomas Layton mit Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku in Tokyo, dem japanischen Angriff auf Pearl Harbor, den amerikanischen Angriff auf die Marshall-Inseln, den Doolittle Raid, die Schlacht im Korallenmeer und letztlich auch die Schlacht um Midway. "Midway - Für die Freiheit" handelt dieses alles in einem Film ab, was schon eine Leistung an sich ist. Der Film dauert zwar über 2 Stunden, aber bei dieser breiten Aufstellung bleibt es nicht aus, dass die Handlung kräftig gekürzt werden musste. Da hilft es, dass teils aus der Sicht des Piloten Dick Best berichtet wird. So fehlen jegliche Hinweise auf den Oberbefehlshaber der US-Flotte, Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher. Und Schiff und Besatzung der USS Enterprise stehen hier eindeutig im Mittelpunkt. Meiner Ansicht nach handelt es sich um einen der besseren, wenn nicht den besten Film des Regisseurs. Für bombige Action hat Roland Emmerich natürlich gesorgt, aber er geht auch auf die Hauptpersonen des Films näher ein. So zeigt er, wie sich der eher großspurige, unsympathische Dick Best nach einem von ihm mitverschuldeten schweren Unfall mit Todesfolge zu einem verantwortungsvollen und bedächtigen, ja auch zweifelnden Menschen ändert.
